Project Information

Title: Urban Development and Climate Change: Current and Historic Urban Footprint and Urban Growth Scenarios

Client: Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo (BID) – 2013

Project Description

Located in the north-western region of Argentina in the Lerma Valley, the city of Salta has begun to deal with an increase in population and sprawling growth. The project centered around creating an analysis of the current urban growth in order to project probable future land use in the city. The analysis focused on two patterns of future urban growth (through 2030) under a trend scenario and a smart growth scenario. In addition, an in-depth analysis of the city’s public spaces and natural areas was undertaken and served as a base for the identification of a green infrastructure network. This network of spaces can be used to increase the cities climate change and natural hazard resiliency, while also providing ecologically necessary connections for animals and serving as recreational amenities to local residents. The results of this analysis helped inform local decision makers about how changes in public policy and the incorporation of a green infrastructure network can impact the future growth of the city
